ReplyDelete1) This article was about how scientists discovered a way to remote-control cockroaches by attaching microchips and receivers to their body. Researchers used electrical signals to direct the cockroach where they wanted it to go, and control its antenna. Researchers are hoping that robotic cockroaches will be useful in collecting and transmitting information during a dangerous situation.
2) I think the scientists decided to use cockroaches because their bodies are specifically designed for surviving in hostile environments. Their exoskeleton and flat body make them a lot more resilient than other robots. The engineers could manipulate the cockroach’s natural instincts instead of having to design, program, and build a new robot.
3) If we combined a robot with a flying insect, such as a dragonfly, a microphone and GPS could be attached to it for delivering confidential messages. If we tried this idea with fish, we could put cameras on them and use them to search the ocean. I think that we could benefit from combining an animal’s structure and instincts with a computer’s knowledge and direction.

ReplyDelete1) Summarize the main point of the article in 2-3 COMPLETE sentences. The main points of this article was that researchers built robotic devices that are attached to cockroaches and are used to manipulate their thoughts to control what they are doing. By using these devices, researchers hope they can be used to gather information in dangerous situations.
2) Why do you think scientists/engineers chose the cockroach for the purpose discussed in the lab? I think They chose the cockroach for the purpose discussed in the lab because they are small, and they can cooperate in hostile environments better than other species.
3) What other insect/robot combinations can you think of that might have interesting and helpful uses (not just in times of disaster but normal everyday life as well)? Describe your ideas in detail. I think that using robotic insects with video cameras will help researchers observe other insects more closely. The robotic insects will monitor what a living insect does on a regular day. How it eats, what it does that scientists have never seen before or how it rests.

1)This article shows that we take technology further and further every second, this time using cockroaches as small rescue alertness controls. Larger roaches have small backpack like things that are attached to them and send signals to the antennae, saying that they may have found something. They will use these to try and get through small spaces to see if there are any survivor(s).
2)I believe that cockroaches were chosen because they are not too large but not too small either. This is a good size to try and climb around things to find the issues. Small spaces are usually challenges every rescue or response teams faces.
3)I think it would be neat to use butterflies and tiny microphones to see how often they interact with humans. If you really think about it, they really try and stay away from us in the city so the interactions with voices would be pretty interesting.

Answer:
The main part of the experiment is so they can send the cockroaches into remote areas. The reason for this is so that is because the humans can’ go into some areas. The cockroaches can handle remote areas.
2) Why do you think scientists/engineers chose the cockroach for the purpose discussed in the lab?
Answer:
I think they chose the cockroach because it can go into remote areas because it takes alot to kill just one cockroach.
3) What other insect/robot combinations can you think of that might have interesting and helpful uses (not just in times of disaster but normal everyday life as well)? Describe your ideas in detail.
Answer:
I think a robot spider could help us a lot because they can get into areas that we can’t and they can also use their web to catch things and catch their prey. For example if i had a robot spider i would use the web to catch all the little bugs that get into my house.

1)Summarize the main point of the article in 2-3 COMPLETE sentences.
A: Scientists have created tiny computer chips to put on the back of cockroaches, so they can find survivors after disasters. The micro controller that is attached to the cockroach’s antenna and cerci allow the scientists to control where it goes and what it does.
2)Why do you think scientists/engineers chose the cockroach for the purpose discussed in the lab?
A: I think they chose the cockroach because they are very small and can fit into tight places and it is already adapted to navigating through tough terrain.
3)What other insect/robot combinations can you think of that might have interesting and helpful uses (not just in times of disaster but normal everyday life as well)? Describe your ideas in detail.
A: I believe that if we could put tiny cameras on dragonflies or some sort of flying insect, we could use them in the military and in the police departments to spy on our enemies or just to look into a building where a criminal might be holding someone hostile. It would make things a lot safer knowing a little bit more about the situation before we react. We could even use the insects that are native to that particular area to not cause any suspicion.

1. The main point of this article is that the researchers from North Carolina State University are controlling cockroaches by sending charges to their antennae. The researchers hope to use the cockroaches to look for survivors after a dangerous disaster.
2. I think that the scientists chose the cockroach because they are small and flat and go into tiny spaces that are too small for humans. The cockroach can also be controlled easily because of the charges sent to the antennae.
3. Another insect/robot combination that I can think of would be a bee. You could attach a miniature video camera to it and see what the bee sees, and in some situations, you could control the bee to sting certain people if it was necessary.

1) The main point of this article was that scientists at North Carolina State University had invented something totally different and helpful to us in many ways. They are using a chip with a wireless receiver and transmitter connected to the cerci and antennae to control the direction of the cockroach. They would use these little creatures to search for any alive humans after disasters to see if they were alive.
2) I think the scientists chose cockroaches to use because if they did you them after a disaster they are small enough to fit in all the tiny cracks and holes, but they are strong and tough enough to go through a disaster and survive.
3) I think you could use many different insects for helpful uses such as butterflies, dragonflies, beetles, even an ant(if you can fit a bit of technology on their backs) you could put video cameras on them, maybe even tiny speakers so they fly around with music playing. (:

The main point of this article is about the invention of cyborg cockroaches. Scientists have invented a tiny cockroach that behaves somewhat like a remote control toy. They can be used to search for survivors after disasters.
2) Why do you think scientists/engineers chose the cockroach for the purpose discussed in the lab?
I think the cockroach was chosen for this experiment because it is tiny enough to fit into small crevasses and crawl over many objects.

Some researchers at North Carolina State University found a way to control cockroaches by manipulating its sensory organs to tell it to go in a certain direction. They think that these robot cockroaches could be used to search for survivors of disasters.
2) Why do you think scientists/engineers chose the cockroach for the purpose discussed in the lab?
I think that they probably used cockroaches because they are relatively small and can squeeze through small spaces that a human never could. In addition, cockroaches are fairly tough and could survive some situations that would be very difficult for humans.
3) What other insect/robot combinations can you think of that might have interesting and helpful uses (not just in times of disaster but normal everyday life as well)? Describe your ideas in detail.
I think that a butterfly with the same kind of controller as the cockroach and a camera could be used as a kind of spy. A butterfly would be inconspicuous and, unlike a fly or a wasp, your first instinct isn't to kill it or get away from it. That way, whoever was using it would be able to get all the information they needed.

1) Summarize the main point of the article in 2-3 COMPLETE sentences.
The main point of the article is that cockroaches have the ability to survive many things that humans can not survive. We can use them because they can squeeze into smaller spaces and if something happens, for example a building falls and people are trapped, they can send in the roaches.
2) Why do you think scientists/engineers chose the cockroach for the purpose discussed in the lab?
Scientists/engineers should chose the cockroach because they can with do many things that humans and other people can’t
3) What other insect/robot combinations can you think of that might have interesting and helpful uses (not just in times of disaster but normal everyday life as well)? Describe your ideas in detail.
Another insect that has helpful uses are dragonflies because they can fly and they are a lot bigger than most insects. They could do the same thing with dragonflies that they do with roaches but dragonflies will have a better chance than roaches because they can fly.

1) The main point of this article is to describe how cockroaches are being used to investigate natural disasters for survivors. They are being controlled by a lightweight chip that has a microcontroller that is connected to the roach’s antennae and cerci. That makes the roach think that it is bumping into things like a wall, so it goes the other way.
2) I think scientists/engineers chose the cockroach because the cockroach is big enough to have the chip put on it, but small enough for it to go into small places that humans can’t. It also has a hard exoskeleton which makes it more durable, in a sense, than humans.
3) I think dragonfly-robot would be helpful for things like painting your toenails. You could have a controller, tie the paintbrush to the dragonfly, and make the dragonfly paint your nails. This could also work for your hands. (but that would probably be harder.)

1. The main idea of this article is that scientist have created a way to control cochroaches. They do this by attaching a micochip to the bodies of the roches. They opperate kinda like a toy car. These roches are used to dicover survivors from disasters.
2. I think the reason why scientics choose cockroches is that they are small and can go places that people and other insects can't. they are able to do this because of their flat bodies.
3. I think a cool idea would be to attach a camera and remote control to a butterfly or dragonfly. It could be used to spy on people. Also people wouldnt try and hit it because its a butterfly. If you did a fly or something around that people would try and kill it or hit it away. They might even damage the camera if it was on a fly.
1. The main idea of this article is to explain how scientists installed a chip onto a cockroach and why. They have discovered a very complex way of controlling in insect such as a cockroach. They have done this to help people or other things in danger by being able to send them through small openings.
ReplyDelete2. Why the scientists decided to use a cockroach is because they are almost impossible to kill. It is said that cockroaches are most likely to survive a disaster like a nuclear bomb! Because of their exoskeleton and ability to live without a head for weeks, it has made them safer from danger.
3. I think any other insect big enough and easy enough to control would be a good idea to learn how to handle. Say there is a hostage situation and police; FBI, CIA, etc. can’t enter or call to see what’s going on. They could send in a chipped bug with a teeny video camera to understand and thus control the situation.

It tells you about how they plan on using this method of controlling a cockroach to search for survivors in disasters. It also briefly explains how the microchip works.
2) Why do you think scientists/engineers chose the cockroach for the purpose discussed in the lab?
I think they chose a cockroach because cockroaches aren’t affected by radiation therefore, they can go into places humans can’t like, somewhere after a nuclear explosion, or their small size could get them through holes in walls if people couldn’t get inside the cockroach might be able to.
3) What other insect/robot combinations can you think of that might have interesting and helpful uses (not just in times of disaster but normal everyday life as well)? Describe your ideas in detail.

1 Summarize the main point of the article in 2-3 COMPLETE sentences. The summary of this article was for researchers to create a radio controlled chip to hook onto a cockroaches back. doing this, the reachershers could control every movement of the cockroaches. And since cockroaches are stereotypically “nuclear bomb proof” they can venture into buildings that might have collapsed.
2 The reason reason why researchers used a cockroach for this experiment was that because cockroaches are radioactive proof, which means radioactive waves don't affect their brains and bodies. and also cockroaches are big enough of a bug to control and small enough to go in destroyed building and small holes.
3 Another insect/robot combinations can you think of that might have interesting and helpful uses (not just in times of disaster but normal everyday life as well) are flies. flies could be used in afghanistan for flying in rooms and hearing or seeing the enemies plans or strategies. Another animal that could be useful in anything could Be fish. If you can control and maneuver real live fish that would be awesome. And having a camera on the fish`s head would be pretty cool. I guess fish could be used to explore in sunken submarines or the titanic for researchers. there could be endless possibilities its all up to the technology .

Answer:
The coral reefs can be wiped out by greenhouse gasses. And that we will have to keep the we have to keep the gasses below 2.0. The main thing is that keep all greenhouse window shut so the gas does not get out. The coral reefs are important because they are used to make bleach.Coral reefs are affected to the climate change because they get too hot and they start to die.

I believe the scientists chose to use cockroaches because their bodies are designed for surviving in harmful types of places. The engineers could manipulate the cockroach’s natural instincts instead of having to create a new idea and attempt to build a new robot. Their flat body and exoskeleton make them more tough

2. Why are coral reefs important? Give two reasons.
Coral reefs are important because they provide shelter for small fish and because algae lives inside corals.
3. How are coral reefs affected by climate change?
When a coral reef gets to hot the reef starts to break down.
4. Explain what coral bleaching is and what ocean acidification is.
Bleach is when algae breaks down and coral doesn’t get the energy it needs, then it turns pale and dies. Ocean acidification is the lack of pH going into the ocean causing the carbon to rise which then forms carbonic acid.
5. What can we do to save coral reefs?
We can save our coral reefs by stop polluting the air.
6. Do you think taking measures to save coral reefs is worthwhile? Why or why not?
Yes, because without them some algae would die because it doesn’t have a home. Also because they are part of our natural heritage and they supply oxygen into the ocean.

I think there are also other insects they could use along with the cockroaches. One of them is flies. Flies are everywhere. Plus, they are also very fast. This makes it very hard to trap the one you want and take the research. Another one is bees. Everyone has bees at their house. Bees sting when they feel they need to. Coral reefs are slowly disappearing and what i mean by disappearing is , dying off.
Coral reefs are some of the most important and valuable ecosystems on Earth. Coral reefs are a habitat to more species of organisms per unit area than any other marine environment. Coral reefs are important because they create a place to live for fish and other species of animals, by having little crevices, holes and caves. Coral reefs feed fish by helping algae grow on corals, while algae grows fish feed off the algae.
Warmer water temperatures brought on by climate change or global warming stresses corals because they are very sensitive to changes in temperature. If water temperatures stay higher than usual for many weeks, the zooxanthellae the zooxanthellae (Zooxanthellae are single-celled plants that live in the tissues of animals), they depend on for some of their food to leave their tissue. Coral bleaching is, when corals turn white because zooxanthellae leaves and cannot give corals their color, and without zooxanthellae their tissue turns white. White, unhealthy corals are called bleached corals. Bleached corals are weak and less able to combat disease.
Ocean Acidification is when carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed by seawater, chemical reactions occur that reduce seawater pH, carbonate ion concentration, and saturation states of biologically important calcium carbonate minerals . Calcium carbonate minerals are the building blocks for the skeletons and shells of many marine organisms.
Yes, because without coral reefs some algae species would die off because that specific coral is essential for their survival, and without it, well... they would die off. corals also should be saved because the are a big part of the ocean bottom ecosystem, because they feed, shelter and create homes for fish, crustaceans, sponges,. etc.
I think the main point of this article is to show the new technology rising to our future.the article gives us hope that If the world was to shut down and there were barely survivors, the cockroach would find them. I think they picked the cockRoach because it is small, so it would fit through the tiniest of cracks to let the help know where to find survivors. The cockroach is also very hard to kill and it's life is very long. Along with the life capacity, it would still live even if there was a nuclear explosion. The cockroach would be our safest bet for an indestructible aid to the survivors.Other than the cockroach and it's wires there are other options for bionic exploration. We could but cameras on monkeys heads to see what life is like in the trees. We could also put directional software only animals that gather food from the jungles, in a sense a sort of way to gather food for the handicapped survivors who are stuck. I think this information is very useful and we should take the opportunity to use it as soon as possible.

1) Summarize the main point of the article in 2-3 COMPLETE sentences.Scientists have taken a lightweight clip and attached it to cockroaches backs. They are hoping to send them into tight spaces after disasters to find people or other evidence.
2) Why do you think scientists/engineers chose the cockroach for the purpose discussed in the lab?Because they are the roach of choice.
3) What other insect/robot combinations can you think of that might have interesting and helpful uses (not just in times of disaster but normal everyday life as well)? Describe your ideas in detail. I think that a spider would be a good expierement since it is small and can crawl well. This could be used to stalk an animal and observe it.
