This article described how coral reefs could be wiped out by global warming if we can’t keep greenhouse gas emissions down. We don’t have much time to get the world’s climate under control in order to preserve the reefs, scientists predict we only have about a decade to change our ways. Researchers used climate simulations to predict the heat stress on various coral reefs around the world.
Coral reefs are very important to ocean ecosystems; they provide shelter and protection for many species of fish. Coral reefs also serve as a barrier between the ocean and shore when the currents are strong. Too much heat will break apart the important symbiotic relationship between the algae and coral. The algae lives within the coral, and the coral relies on the algae as an energy source. Coral turns pale or is “bleached” when this happens.
Ocean acidification is when the ph level of the oceans decreases due to the uptake of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, caused by humans. This makes it much more difficult for the coral to withstand warmer temperatures. To protect coral reefs: we need to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and global warming will have to be kept below 1.5C. We should definitely take the necessary measures to save coral reefs because they are very important to ocean ecosystems.

    1. Read and summarize, in three sentences minimum, the article:
This article is about how global warming is affecting the coral reefs. A huge part of this is greenhouse gas emissions. If we want to keep our coral reefs, we will have to keep our greenhouse gas emissions down.
    2. Why are coral reefs important?
Coral reefs are so important because they are a home to many marine wildlife and provide as a barrier between ocean currents and waves.
    3. Give two reasons how are coral reefs are affected by climate change?
The heat breaks down vital symbiotic relationship between the coral and algae that live amongst them, and they bleach.
    4. Explain what coral bleaching is and what ocean acidification is.
Coral bleaching is the paling of coral, and ocean acidification is the increase of pH levels in earths’ oceans.
    5. What can we do to save coral reefs?
We can stop our greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.
    6. Do you think taking measures to save coral reefs is worthwhile? Why or why not?
Yes, because they play a major role in the oceans ecosystem by providing shelter for marine life, they are beautiful scenery for humans, and they protect us as a barrier from currents and waves.

Read and summarize in three sentences minimum the article. This article talks about how global warming is eventually going to make coral reefs become extinct. Its also talks about how if we don't do something soon to help them we will have no chance to help them. It also explains what is happening to the coral reefs.
Why are coral reefs important? Give two reasons. Coral reefs have been used in medical treatments, they are also a home for some fish, and they buffer shore lines against floods, and storms.
How are coral reefs affected by climate change? Too much heat breaks down the coral and the algae that give the coral energy.
Explain what coral bleaching is and what ocean acidification is (read here). Coral bleaching is when too much heat breaks down the coral and the algae that give the coral energy, which causes the coral to bleach or turn white. Ocean acidification is the increase of acidity in the ocean because of the amount of Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
What can we do to save coral reefs? We could conserve water so less waste enters the ocean, we also could take more caution as to where we throw away our trash, so instead of seeing someone drop trash and ignoring it, we could go pick it up and throw it away.
Do you think taking measures to save coral reefs is worthwhile? Why or why not? Yes, because coral reefs take a big part in the role of life, if we didn’t have coral reefs there would be less homes for fish, if there were less homes for fish, there would be less fish, then humans and any other animal that eats fish would have less fish to eat, and so on.

  7. Read and summarize in three sentences minimum the article.
Over the next 10 years, greenhouse gas emissions can cause our coral reefs to bleach and die. Global warming is ruining the reefs because they cannot react to the temperature fast enough. The warmth causes the symbiotic relationship between the coral and algae to disappear, which is a great source of energy for it.

    Why are coral reefs important?
Coral reefs are important because they feed a lot of little organisms and also give homes to many sea creatures. Coral reefs are the basis of the oceanic food chain.

How are coral reefs affected by climate change?
The temperature breaks down the symbiotic relationship between the reefs and algae. The algae gives the coral most of its energy, so when the algae leave, the corals bleach and die.

Explain what coral bleaching is and what ocean acidification is.
Coral bleaching is what happens when it gets too hot for the coral. This makes it die. Oceanic acidification is all of the pH is the ocean going away.

What can we do to save coral reefs?
We can stop greenhouse gas emissions and global warming.

Do you think taking measures to save coral reefs is worthwhile?
Saving coral reefs is worthwhile and also important because they feed and give a home to many sea creatures. Also, they put oxygen into the oceans.

  10. Why are coral reefs important? Give two reasons.

Because they are part of our “national heritage” and losing coral reefs would also affect the algae that lives inside of them

How are coral reefs affected by climate change?

When it is to hot it causes them to bleach. When it is bleached to much it causes it to die.

Explain what coral bleaching is and what ocean acidification is (read here).

Coral bleaching is when it gets to hot and it affects the vital connection between the coral and the algae that relies on an energy source which then cause the coral to get to pale and die. Ocean acidification is the lack of pH going into the ocean causing the carbon to rise which then forms carbonic acid.

What can we do to save coral reefs?

Don’t pollute too much and rein in the greenhouse gas emissions.

Do you think taking measures to save coral reefs is worthwhile? Why or why not?

Yes, because the algae need a place to live and without algae the organisms that eat algae will die and so on with the whole food chain.

    1) In this article, coral reefs are dying off because of the greenhouse gases we keep releasing in to the atmosphere. We have to lower the heat of the atmosphere because the over 2,000 reefs are feeling the stress from the coral and algae breaking down. We have to keep the temperature below 1.5C to keep them safe.

    2) Coral reefs are important because they provide a safe environment for small ocean creatures such as fish, crustaceans and obviously coral. Coral reefs also provide food for sea turtles, eels, and other larger sea creatures.

    3) Coral reefs are affected by climate change because when it gets to hot for the reefs, it breaks down the much need relationship of the algae and the coral.

    4) Coral bleaching is when the algae breaks down the coral doesn’t the get right energy it needs, so it turns a pale color called bleach. If this happens for too long the coral will die. Ocean acidification happens when more carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere and the pH levels decrease.

    5) We need to lower the amount of carbon dioxide we release and lower the temperature of global warming to save these helpless creatures. Yes, it is worth while to save the coral reefs not only because they are beautiful, but because it is one of the most important ecosystems in the world and if we do lose them we could also put tons of species in danger of their existence.

1)Read and summarize in three sentences minimum the article.
The summary of the article about coral reefs comes down to how endangered they are in the ocean. Basically, most of the worlds coral could be wiped out if greenhouse gas emissions are not reigned over the next ten years. We also must keep a controlled temperature to keep the coral alive because over 2,000 reefs are suffering from the breakage of the coral and algae due to the heat.
2)Why are coral reefs important? Give two reasons
Coral reefs are important because they provide shelter and food for many species living in the ocean. For example, many fish utilize coral as a safe environment for their home. The coral also provides food for larger animals such as eels.
3)How are coral reefs affected by climate change?
Coral reefs are affected by climate change because when the temperature gets to high, the coral and the algae break down which ends up killing the coral reef. That is why the temperature is now being controlled so that the coral reefs do not die since they provide many living abilities.
    4) Explain what coral bleaching is and what ocean acidification is.
Coral bleaching is when the coral does not receive the right amount of energy, so when it starts to die off, then the appearance of the coral turns to a pale, faded white color.
Ocean acidification happens when the pH level in the ocean decreases, because of too much carbon dioxide being in the atmosphere.
    5) What can we do to save coral reefs? Do you think taking measures to save coral reefs is worthwhile? Why or why not?
What we can do to save the coral reefs is decrease the amount of greenhouse gasses that are emitted into the air. I also think that taking certain measures to save the coral is worthwhile because the coral is natural heritage, food, shelter, and all around a great economic system for the ocean. So, yes taking measures to save the coral is definitely worthwhile.

Scientists predict that most of the world’s coral reefs will become extinct if the greenhouse gas emissions aren’t reined over the next ten years. They also said that the global warming would have to be kept below 1.5C for at least half of the world’s coral reefs to be able to live. Also, the ocean has become more acidic and it makes the coral reefs weaker during warmer temperatures.
2.Why are coral reefs important? Give two reasons.
Coral reefs are important because they are part of the world’s natural heritage and have a vital symbiotic relationship with algae.
3.How are coral reefs affected by climate change?
If there is too much heat in the ocean, the symbiotic relationship between the coral and the algae break. The coral will bleach and might eventually die.
4.Explain what coral bleaching is and what ocean acidification is.
Ocean acidification is when the oceans pH is decreasing. Coral bleaching is when the symbiotic relationship of the algae and the coral is broken.
    5. What can we do to save coral reefs?
We can stop or at least lower greenhouse gas emissions, and keep global warming down.

Greenhouse gas emissions could wipe out most of the world’s coral reefs in ten years time. In order for this not to happen, global warming would have to stay below 1.5C to protect the coral reefs. Lastly, the amounts of acid in the oceans are not healthy for coral reefs.

      2. Why are coral reefs important? Give two reasons.

One reason coral reefs are very important is that they provide food for different organisms living in the ocean. Secondly, reefs are a safe environment for fish, coral, and crustaceans to live.

      3. How are coral reefs affected by climate change?

If the temperatures of the oceans rise, coral bleaching occurs. If coral bleaching does not stop, eventually the coral dies.

The main idea of the article is to explain that global warming is greatly affecting coral reefs. They die if it is too hot. If we keep global warming under 1.5C, we can stop half the coral reefs from dying. Green house gas are the main cause of this global warming that is killing all of the coral. They go a bleach white before they die, and if global warming continues too long, they will die.

Coral reefs are important to fish. Fish use them for their habitat and they depend on them to survive. Another reason is that if fish did because the coral are dying, some people who depend on fish will not get food to eat which may result in human starvation in extreme cases. Also, big fish depend on the little fish that live in the coral to survive. If coral died, a lot of fish would die too.

Coral reefs are affected by the environment because the heat is making them die. Excessive heat cuts off the symbiotic relationship between the coral and algae. The coral gets energy from the algae, and when the coral doesn't get energy, it will die.

Coral bleaching is when too much heat causes the symbiotic relationship between algae and coral reefs to break. The coral reefs depend on the algae for their energy supply. When they don't get the energy they need, they will go bleach white. If this continues to go on, the coral will die.
Ocean acidification is when the heat from global warming causes the pH balance of the ocean to decrease. This makes the ocean more acidic which will eventually cause the coral to die. This affect comes from global warming.

To save coral reefs, we can stop the greenhouses from producing too much energy. The greenhouses are the main reasons for global warming which is the reason for the coral reefs dying. We can send around things like petitions to lower the hours of greenhouses being in use.

I think taking measures to save coral reefs is very important because coral reefs are the main habitat for a lot of fish. Plus, coral reefs are beautiful. A lot of scuba divers dive just to look at the amazing reefs. If reefs died, some people would be out of work.

There are a few reasons why coral reefs are important. One of the biggest reasons is because they are a home for many different types of sea creatures. They are used as nesting places and things like that. The climate change affects the reef because when the temperatures change then something called coral bleaching accords. After a length of time with this occurring, the reefs will die out. Leaving many marina animals without homes or food. Coral bleaching is when the temperature of the water rises causing the algae in the coral to die. Algae is very important to coral and without is they turn pale and die. There are a few different things that us humans can do. One of the things we can do to stop the greenhouse gas from producing and emitting so much of it. That would help with global warming also which in turn would help preserve the reefs. I very much so think it is worth it to take measures to save the reefs. They are very important to the ocean and the life in it. Without the reef, the eating cycle will be ruined and so will our ocean. We need to do everything we can to help save the reef.

    1. Summary: The article explains how coral reefs are being screwed up by global warming and greenhouse gasses. The problem is that the heat is breaking the symbiotic relationship between the reefs and the algae within them, this leads to a bleaching state of the reef then soon after death. If we don’t cool down the temperatures we could soon have many dead coral reefs on our hands, and without coral reefs the ocean will be deprived of oxygen.

2.Why are coral reefs important? Coral reefs provide oxygen to the fish and other inhabitants of the ocean. If those coral reefs were killed, than the ocean would be deprived of oxygen and the inhabitants of the ocean would be deprived of oxygen and soon die, which would through the entire world’s ecosystem off and it would affect everyone of us.

    3. Give two reasons how global climate change are affecting coral reefs. The heat caused by greenhouse gasses kills coral reefs. And by destroying their enviroment.

4.Explain what coral bleaching is and what ocean acidification is. Ocean acidification is the ongoing decrease in pH in the ocean. Coral bleaching the when coral reefs get pale and die.

5.What can we do to stop coral reefs from dieing? If we are stop the ballooning of greenhouse gas emissions we have a small window for saving the coral reefs.

6.Do you think that saving coral reefs is worth the effort? Oh most certainly, without marine life creature who may eat those things could also be affected by this and die, as well as the loss of an entire food group, fish. The ocean is not just a home for creatures, but it is also a provider for the entire world, and if we lose that providing we lose ultimately.

1)This article was about how we're close to cutting the numbers in half to wiping the coral reef ecosystem totally out. We practically lost almost twenty percent of the coral reef species in 1998 because of global warming. We'd better cut down on emissions because world warming sure isn't going to drastically slow down anytime soon.

2)Coral reefs are important because they serve as habitats for different small sea creatures. They're also important because they're natural heritage and it would be nice to preserve them.

3)Coral bleaching is where heat breaks down the symbiotic relationship between the coral and the algae where the coral turns pale. If the bleaching continues, the coral will die.

4)Ocean adification is where the PH levels in the oceans are decreasing because one fourth of the atmosphere is going to the ocean, making carbonic acid. This is like global climate change.

5)We can only cut down on emissions and not pollute, but polluting has taken it's effect in the middle of pacific ocean. Then maybe we can save these beuatiful sights underwater. I think saving the coral reefs would be worthwhile not only for the animals but for us as well. I truly want to see these when I visit Australia because they are so beautiful and I want to see these coral reefs thriving when I visit and when others visit as well.

  22. The article is about how global warming from green house emmisons is hurting the reefs. The importance of stopping this is great, because it balances the ecosystem we live in as well. Scientist believe we have about a decade to change what we are doing in order to help save the reefs before its too late.

Coral reefs are important because they balance the ecosystem in many ways. They house and protect many species in the ocean like small fish, algae, and other creatures. The reef protects from storms, currents, and other natural problems. Algae lives inside of coral. They have a symbiotic relationship, but with hotter waters from global warming the relationship is damaged causing the coral to turn pale, or “bleached”.

Ocean acidification is when the Ph of the ocean water is decreased causing acidity in the water. This happens because of excess carbon dioxide created from humans. To protect coral reefs we need to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. We also need a more efficient way of collecting trash, and preventing it from going into the ocean.

Coral reefs are some of the most important and valuable ecosystems on Earth. Coral reefs are a habitat to more species of organisms per unit area than any other marine environment. Coral reefs are important because they create a place to live for fish and other species of animals, by having little crevices, holes and caves. Coral reefs feed fish by helping algae grow on corals, while algae grows fish feed off the algae.

Warmer water temperatures brought on by climate change or global warming stresses corals because they are very sensitive to changes in temperature. If water temperatures stay higher than usual for many weeks, the zooxanthellae the zooxanthellae (Zooxanthellae are single-celled plants that live in the tissues of animals), they depend on for some of their food to leave their tissue. Coral bleaching is, when corals turn white because zooxanthellae leaves and cannot give corals their color, and without zooxanthellae their tissue turns white. White, unhealthy corals are called bleached corals. Bleached corals are weak and less able to combat disease.

Ocean Acidification is when carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed by seawater, chemical reactions occur that reduce seawater pH, carbonate ion concentration, and saturation states of biologically important calcium carbonate minerals . Calcium carbonate minerals are the building blocks for the skeletons and shells of many marine organisms.

Yes, because without coral reefs some algae species would die off because that specific coral is essential for their survival, and without it, well... they would die off. corals also should be saved because the are a big part of the ocean bottom ecosystem, because they feed, shelter and create homes for fish, crustaceans, sponges,. etc.

Summarize in two to three sentences the main part of the article.
Coral reefs are on their way to becoming extinct if we don't lower the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. About half of the ocean reefs worldwide will lose protection if warming isn't kept below 1.5C. Higher temperatures break down the symbiotic relationship between coral and algea, which is the main energy source for the reefs.

Why are coral reefs important? Give two reasons.
Coral reefs are important because they are a habitat for certain fish, and without the reefs they will lose their homes. They are also a part of our world's natural heritage.

How are coral reefs affected by climate change? Explain what coral bleaching is and what ocean acidification is.
Higher temperatures lead to coral bleaching, which is when the symbiotic relationship between coral and algae breaks down. This eliminates a source of energy and also causes the coral to become pale. Ocean acidification is a rise in the acidity of the oceans caused by carbon absorption, and it reduces the coral's tolerance for higher temperatures.

What can we do to save coral reefs? Do you think taking measures to save coral reefs is worthwhile? Why or why not? We can try to limit our greenhouse gas emissions so that it can at least slow down the rate of climate change. I think it would be worthwhile because coral reefs are a part of our natural heritage and without them, some species of fish would die off because they wouldn't have a habitat that could support their needs.

    Block 2

Summarize in two to three sentences the main part of the article.

Like global warming above the ocean , carbon is causing the Ph in the oceans around the world to fall. Making the oceans 30% more acidic. Ultimately increasing the waters temperature, impacting many species.

Why are coral reefs important? Give two reasons.
They are important because the provide a proper habitat for many different species of fish, algea, coral and other animals to live in. If they leave to fast they will impact the world without enough time to evolve.

How are coral reefs affected by climate change? Explain what coral bleaching is and what ocean acidification is?

The excess release of carbon causes temperatures to rise in the ocean and in coral reefs this is coral bleaching, killing the coral. When the carbon increases in the ocean so does its acidity, this is Ocean acidification.

What we can do to save coral reefs?

Over time by cutting down our carbon release slowly, over a period of time we can hopefully slowly undo the situation. This is beneficial because coral reefs are a place for many different animals to live.

This article is about how due to global warming, coral reefs may become extinct. In this article, it explains how we can help prevent coral reefs becoming extinct by lowing greenhouse gas emissions.

Coral reefs are important because they are habitats for many organisms and provide food for lots of fish and other species.

Coral bleaching is when the temperature of the ocean rises and kills the coral. Coral reefs are affected by the climate change because the water gets too warm for the coral to survive.

If we control greenhouse gas emissions, the amount of carbon released, then eventually we might be able to save the coral reefs.

The article was talking about how the worlds coral reef could be destroyed due to a vast increased in global warming if we can’t keep the green house effect into down. Most scientist believe that we only have about a decade to change are ways and save all of are earths coral. We don’t want to destroy all of the coral because it is a vital part of the ocean ecosystem; it provides shelter and protection for many species of fish. As we learned in are biology class is that were all connected to a food web and if one thing lets go than we’ll all be affected. I think that we should stop destroying are coral reefs and try to start rebuilding them or we will all be affected in a bad way sooner or later.

2.Why are coral reefs important? They are important because they contain a lot of habitats for the fish and other animals.

3.Give two reasons how global climate change are affecting coral reefs. The heat caused by greenhouse gasses kills coral reefs. And by destroying their environment.

4.Explain what coral bleaching is and what ocean acidification is? Coral bleaching is where the coral breaks down and starts to ooze out bleach. Ocean acidification is the decrease in ph in earths oceans.

5.What can we do to stop coral reefs from dieing? If we are stop the ballooning of greenhouse gas emissions we have a small window for saving the coral reefs.

    6. Do you think taking measures to save coral reefs is worthwhile? Why or why not? Yes, I think that it is worthwhile because coral reefs are part of marine life and are part of our natural heritage.

  31. Climate messes with the reef because "Too much heat breaks down the vital symbiotic relationship between coral and the algae that live within them, and which they rely on as an energy source. This causes the coral to turn pale, or "bleach". If the bleaching goes on for too long the coral die." "Ocean acidification is the name given to the ongoing decrease in the pH of the Earth's oceans." To save the coral reefs we could decrease acidity and try to reverse some of the effects of global warming. I think we should do this because we need to save our earth and its ecosystems. we really need to keep our oceans beautiful.
